In 1772, Johann Herder published A Treatise on the Origin of Language. Herder is associated with the ideology of nationalism, in particular German nationalism.

The course was taught in English and examined a number of his major writings, mainly from the early period spanning the two decades from the mid-1760s to the 1780s. Language, to Herder, is the very essence of a people. “The very first words we stammer,” he declared, “are the foundation stones of our knowing.” For this reason, he called upon his fellow Germans to resist what he called the “cancer” of French. Whoever masters the entire scope of one language surveys a field full of thoughts, and whoever learns to express himself precisely in it thereby gathers for himself a treasure of clear concepts.
